Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to question certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
