Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
